The shock of receiving your diagnosis may have left you filled with doubt and anxiety. The St Stephen Oncology Centre would like to ensure that your treatment experience is as comfortable and easy as possible. This information is not only to help you understand what Oncology is about, but also to empower you to make important decisions regarding your health and future. It is designed to tell you, and people close to you, what to expect and what you can do to help yourself during treatment. Information on side-effects you may experience is included, and how to deal with them.
There are various treatments available in the fight against cancer, the most common being surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Each patient is treated as a unique individual and treatment is tailored to comply with his or her specific needs. Although it will help you understand the treatment process, you are likely to have additional questions and concerns. Remember, no information package can replace discussions with your radiation oncologist.
Specially trained personnel (counsellors, dieticians, social workers) are available to help you and your family through this difficult time. You are encouraged to visit these counsellors throughout your treatment process. Your quality of life and well-being is our primary goal.
